Modern Houses: Extramadura House
This amazing house is a project by Madrid Studio, Abaton Architects in Extramadura, Spain. This house located in a remote part of Spain’s western countryside, is actually a transformation of an abandoned house into a family dream home.
One of the challenges the architects faced was the absence of a reliable water supply and electrical connection. To overcome this, Abaton turned to renewable energy sources. Fortunately, a natural water sources was found on the property. Beyond the rustic stone façade and barn-board doors lies a surprisingly contemporary interior.
This project is a great example of historic meets modern, highlighted by the homes’ striking mix of limestone floors, exposes concrete walls, worn wooden ceiling beams and timeworn stone. The floor-to-ceiling windows incorporate very well the beautiful scenery and promote a flow of the fresh country air. There is a perfect balance between old and new, which gives a distinct sense of nostalgia; keeping the old memories alive with the help of the new.
